DDR4 vs DDR5Generations, speed and compatibility

DDR5 is the newer memory generation, offering higher data rates (4800 MT/s and up versus DDR4's typical 2133–3600), larger module capacities, lower voltage (1.1 V versus 1.2 V) and on-module power management and error correction. DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible; a motherboard supports one or the other, not both in the same slot.

The split into two subchannels per DDR5 module improves efficiency, and moving the power-management IC onto the module gives tighter voltage regulation, which supports the higher speeds.

Not interchangeable

DDR4 and DDR5 use different pin layouts and a differently positioned notch, and they run at different voltages with different signalling. A DDR5 module will not physically fit a DDR4 slot, and the two cannot be mixed. The CPU and motherboard dictate which generation you use:

  • A platform is DDR4 or DDR5, fixed by the memory controller and socket.
  • A few early transitional boards offered separate DDR4 and DDR5 variants of the same chipset, but never both in one board.

Check the motherboard specification (and the BIOS/UEFI support list) before buying memory.

Is the upgrade worth it?

  • New build on a current platform: DDR5 is standard and sensible; buy a kit on the board's qualified vendor list and enable XMP/EXPO.
  • Gaming: the difference over fast DDR4 is often small; capacity (16 GB minimum, 32 GB comfortable) and dual channel matter more.
  • Bandwidth-heavy work (content creation, large data sets, integrated graphics): DDR5's bandwidth is a real advantage.
  • Existing DDR4 system: there is no path to DDR5 without a new CPU and board, so stay with DDR4.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put DDR5 in a DDR4 motherboard?

No. The modules have the notch in a different position and are electrically incompatible, so DDR5 will not fit or work in a DDR4 slot and vice versa. The motherboard and CPU platform determine which you need; check the board specification before buying.

Is DDR5 worth it over DDR4?

For a new build on a current platform, DDR5 is the natural choice and its higher bandwidth helps bandwidth-sensitive tasks and integrated graphics. For gaming the real-world difference is often modest. On an existing DDR4 platform, staying with DDR4 is sensible; you cannot mix them anyway.

Does DDR5 have error correction?

DDR5 adds on-die ECC that corrects errors within the chip, which improves reliability at high speeds. This is not the same as full system ECC (which protects data across the whole path and needs platform support); on-die ECC is built into every DDR5 module.
