RAM speedMHz, MT/s, timings and dual channel
RAM "speed" is the data rate in mega-transfers per second (MT/s), often loosely called MHz. DDR memory transfers twice per clock cycle, so DDR4-3200 runs at a 1600 MHz clock but 3200 MT/s. Reaching the rated speed usually requires enabling the XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) profile in the BIOS; otherwise the memory runs at a slower default.
What the number means
RAM speed is a data rate measured in mega-transfers per second (MT/s). DDR (Double Data Rate) memory transfers data twice per clock cycle, so the data rate is twice the clock frequency:
DDR4-3200 → 1600 MHz clock × 2 = 3200 MT/s
DDR5-6000 → 3000 MHz clock × 2 = 6000 MT/sPackaging usually prints "3200 MHz", which is the MT/s figure by common (if imprecise) convention.
Timings
Alongside the data rate, memory has timings, written like 16-18-18-38. The first, CAS latency (CL), is the most cited: the delay in clock cycles before the memory returns requested data. Lower is faster, but timings must be compared at the same data rate, since a higher-MT/s kit with a higher CL can still deliver data sooner in real time.
XMP and EXPO
JEDEC defines conservative default speeds that every CPU guarantees (for example DDR4-2133/2400 or DDR5-4800). Memory rated higher reaches its advertised speed only when you enable its XMP (Intel Extreme Memory Profile) or EXPO (AMD) profile in the BIOS/UEFI. Without it, a DDR5-6000 kit runs at 4800. This is the single most common reason RAM "runs slower than the box says".
Channels matter more than frequency
Bandwidth depends on both speed and the number of active channels. Two matched sticks running in dual channel provide roughly double the bandwidth of a single stick, which usually helps more than a modest frequency bump. Populate the correct slots (the motherboard manual specifies which pair, often slots 2 and 4) and use a matched kit.
Checking your speed
- Task Manager → Performance → Memory shows the current speed and slot usage.
- CPU-Z (SPD and Memory tabs) shows the modules, their rated profiles and the running speed and timings.
- systeminfo shows installed capacity but not speed.
If the running speed is below the rating, enable XMP/EXPO. If the system will not boot at the rated profile, the kit, the CPU's memory controller or the board may not support that speed with the installed configuration; a lower profile or fewer sticks may be needed. Aggressive memory overclocking can cause instability and WHEA errors.
Frequently asked questions
Is RAM MHz or MT/s?
Technically MT/s. DDR (Double Data Rate) memory moves data on both the rising and falling edge of the clock, so a module labelled "3200 MHz" actually has a 1600 MHz clock and a 3200 MT/s data rate. The industry commonly writes MHz on packaging; MT/s is the accurate term.
Why is my RAM running slower than its rating?
Without XMP or EXPO enabled, memory runs at the CPU's guaranteed default speed (for example DDR4-2133 or DDR5-4800), not the rated speed on the label. Enable the XMP/EXPO profile in the BIOS to reach the advertised MT/s. See BIOS vs UEFI.
Does higher RAM speed matter?
It helps some workloads (integrated graphics, certain games, AMD Ryzen memory-sensitive tasks) and barely affects others. Running in dual channel matters more than raw frequency for overall bandwidth; two matched sticks in the correct slots is the first priority.
