Normal GPU temperatureIdle, gaming and hotspot limits
A modern graphics card usually idles at 30–50°C and runs 60–85°C while gaming, which is normal. Manufacturers rate GPUs to throttle around 83–90°C (edge temperature) and higher for the hotspot and memory-junction sensors. Sustained temperatures near the throttle point are safe but a sign that cooling or airflow could be improved.

These vary widely with the cooler design: a large triple-fan card runs cooler than a compact or blower model at the same load, and both are fine within their own limits.
Three temperatures, not one
Modern cards report several sensors:
- Edge (GPU temperature): the traditional average die temperature. Throttling is keyed to this, around 83–90°C.
- Hotspot (junction): the hottest point on the die, 10–20°C above the edge, with a higher limit (often ~110°C). A widening edge-to-hotspot gap over time can signal degraded thermal interface material.
- Memory junction: GDDR6/GDDR6X temperature, rated to roughly 95–105°C. Memory-heavy workloads push this up while the core stays cooler.
Judge each against its own limit, not against a single "safe" figure.
When to act
- Idle above 55–60°C with fans running: check airflow and dust.
- Gaming above 90°C edge, or hotspot near its limit with throttling: improve case airflow, clean the card, or (for older cards) consider repasting.
- VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE crashes under load can accompany overheating or an unstable overclock; the Desktop Window Manager drives the GPU even at the desktop, so driver issues show up there too.
Reading it
Use the GPU vendor's app (NVIDIA app, AMD Software), HWiNFO or MSI Afterburner, and log edge, hotspot and memory-junction while gaming rather than reading a single instantaneous value.
Frequently asked questions
Is 85°C safe for a GPU while gaming?
Yes. Most modern GPUs are designed to run into the mid-80s°C under gaming load and only begin throttling around 83–90°C at the edge sensor. 85°C is normal, especially on compact or blower-style coolers. Sustained temperatures above 90°C are worth investigating.
What is GPU hotspot temperature?
The hottest single point on the die, reported separately from the average "edge" temperature on many cards. It runs 10–20°C higher than the edge and has a higher limit (often around 110°C). A large and growing gap between edge and hotspot can indicate degraded thermal paste or pad contact.
What about memory-junction temperature?
GDDR6 and GDDR6X memory has its own sensor and is rated to roughly 95–105°C. High-memory-bandwidth cards can reach the 90s°C on memory while the core stays cooler; that is within spec but again indicates the cooling is working hard.
