The honest answer: it depends
There is no single "safe" CPU temperature, because the safe range depends on the exact processor, its generation, the cooler, the case and the room. What follows are ranges, not absolutes; check your specific model's specification for its maximum junction temperature.

What the limits mean
- TjMax (maximum junction temperature) is the temperature at which the CPU begins thermal throttling, deliberately slowing down to reduce heat. This is a protective feature, not damage. Intel and AMD set it in the 90–105°C range depending on the model.
- Thermal shutdown occurs a few degrees above TjMax if throttling cannot keep up, cutting power to prevent damage. Reaching it repeatedly indicates a real cooling fault.
- Brief spikes toward TjMax during a sudden load are normal; sustained operation there is not.
Desktop versus laptop
Laptops run hotter under load by design: thin chassis, small heatsinks and shared cooling for CPU and GPU. 90–95°C while gaming on a laptop is common and within spec, though it may throttle to stay there. The same temperature on a desktop with a large cooler suggests something is wrong.
Reading your temperature
Use HWiNFO, Core Temp, or your motherboard or laptop vendor's utility. Watch the package or core temperature, and note the difference between idle and load rather than fixating on one number. The antimalware scanner and other background tasks can raise idle temperatures temporarily.
When cooling needs attention
- Idle temperatures above 50–55°C on a desktop.
- Load temperatures sustained at 90°C+ on a desktop.
- Rapid spikes to TjMax with throttling during ordinary tasks.
Fixes, from easiest: clear dust from the cooler and case, ensure fans spin and airflow is unobstructed, reseat the cooler, replace old thermal paste, and check that an AIO pump is running. A WHEA uncorrectable error under load can accompany severe overheating or instability from aggressive overclocking.
